Google Ads for Clinics: A Practical Campaign Guide

A useful clinic Google Ads campaign connects an appropriate search with a clear service, a credible landing page and a team ready to respond. Start by defining the appointment you want to support and how you will recognise a useful enquiry. Then choose settings, creative and measurement that fit the clinic. This guide sets out a practical sequence for planning and reviewing search campaigns without assuming that clicks, leads and patients are interchangeable.

1. Choose a service and confirm campaign readiness

Confirm the treatment or service, location, appointment capacity and practitioner availability. Identify the page people will visit, the consultation fee if applicable and the team handling new enquiries. A campaign can create demand faster than a clinic can resolve a missing handover or unclear appointment route.

Review the full advertisement and destination against the rules that apply to the service. Prescription-only medicines cannot be promoted to the public directly or indirectly. A consultation label does not automatically make an otherwise promotional route acceptable. Use the ASA guidance linked below when assessing relevant cosmetic services.

2. Define conversion actions before choosing bids

Write down what each recorded action means. A click on a telephone number, an answered call, a completed form and an attended consultation are different events. Choose primary outcomes that match the campaign objective and keep weaker supporting signals distinguishable.

Check for duplicate events, repeat enquiries and actions that fire before a successful submission. Where clinic systems can lawfully provide later outcomes, agree the definitions and connection first. Clinical suitability is a practitioner decision; administrative enquiry relevance should not be presented as the same thing. A dashboard needs to label unavailable information clearly.

3. Organise searches around real decisions

Use existing search terms, service information and patient questions to identify relevant themes. Permitted searches such as dental implants in a real service area or laser hair removal consultations should lead to appropriate pages. Separate campaigns when budget, location or goals need independent control; group advertisements around a shared intent and destination.

Choose match types deliberately and inspect the searches they attract. Exact and phrase match also include related matching behaviour, so they do not remove the need for review. Assess exclusions in context: a universal negative list can accidentally block useful questions about cost, comparison or access.

4. Make the advertisement and page agree

Write accurate assets that explain the service, location and next step. Use credentials, availability or offer details only when they are current and substantiated. The landing page should continue the same promise, identify the practitioner and explain relevant assessment, fee and contact information.

Test the page on mobile and with a keyboard. Check labels, validation, contact links and the successful enquiry path. Choose a focused treatment page when it answers the search best; there is no universal requirement to remove navigation or rebuild the entire website. Useful information and a working route matter more than a formulaic page length.

5. Select budget and bidding from the evidence

Agree an affordable test budget using available demand, delivery capacity and the clinic's commercial objectives. Management fees and media spend are separate costs. Avoid treating a treatment's headline price as the amount available to acquire a patient: clinical delivery and other costs still need to be covered.

Choose a currently available bidding strategy appropriate to the objective and reliability of the conversion data. Do not use a fixed conversion-count rule as a substitute for assessing data quality and conversion delay. Enhanced CPC is no longer available for Search and Display campaigns; check current Google documentation before implementation.

6. Review waste and outcome quality together

Check delivery, disapprovals, destinations and tracking from launch. Review search terms, location relevance, budget pacing and the clinic's enquiry feedback at an agreed cadence. Resolve technical failures before interpreting an apparent fall in demand. Record meaningful changes so later results have context.

Use Quality Score as a diagnostic aid rather than the campaign's success target. Compare valid enquiries, contact, consultations and recorded downstream outcomes as they mature. Privacy choices, calls, different devices and offline bookings leave attribution gaps. Neither an ad-platform conversion nor a high Quality Score proves a profitable new patient.

7. Turn the review into a clear next action

Choose the constraint supported by the evidence: irrelevant searches, unclear pages, missing contact ownership or insufficient appointment capacity require different responses. Assign an owner and a measurable check to the next change rather than changing every setting at once.

ClinicGrower's free Audit reviews public website, search and enquiry routes. The Clinic Growth Diagnostic is the deeper option when connected evidence is needed. Programme scope then defines the marketing work, treatments and channels included, with Performance OS supporting reporting where systems can connect. The guidance below is a planning reference, not a promise of results.

Questions clinic owners ask

What should a clinic check before increasing Google Ads spend?

Check relevant search demand, search terms, location targeting, landing-page clarity and reliable enquiry tracking. Then compare the quality of enquiries and downstream bookings with capacity and acquisition cost, rather than judging a campaign by clicks alone.

How should a clinic choose the landing page for an advert?

Use a page that answers the searcher's treatment or service question, explains the clinic's relevant credentials and offers a clear enquiry route. The advert, page and available service should describe the same offer.
